|SLPWA Urges Cuomo to Resist LNG
By DAVID L. SHAW
GENEVA — The Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association is urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo not to allow the implementation of proposed regulations for the expansion of the use of Liquefied Natural Gas in the state.
In a Dec. 9 letter to Cuomo, four SLPWA officials said that “facilitating the intrastate transportation, expanded storage and production of LNG with the state will further pollute the air, water and environment not only of our state, but the entire planet.”
They are referring to state Department of Environmental Conservation draft regulations to allow the expanded use of fossil fuel to bring the broader use of LNG.
The group said the regulations could increase the number of facilities related to LNG, leading to major security and regulatory issues. They told Cuomo that “tens of thousands” of state citizens have commented on the inadequacy of the proposed regulations.
“If approved, the proposed regulations would clearly be the most irresponsible step the DEC has taken from an environmental and hazard standpoint during your administration,” they wrote. “This step would be seen as a result of pressure from the oil and gas industry.”
