Gas Drilling Wastes in Local Landfills, Wed., Feb. 26, 7:00 pm, Elmira

An informational program on issues involved in taking gas drilling wastes in Southern Tier landfills will be held Wed., Feb. 26 at 7:00 pm at the Steele Memorial Library, 101 E Church St. in Elmira. The speakers will be Gary Abraham and Larry Shilling. The program is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Steuben County and People for a Healthy Environment.

Attorney Gary Abraham has represented various local groups on landfill issues, including Residents for the Preservation of Lowman and Chemung and Concerned Citizens of Allegany County. Larry Shilling is Regional Vice President for Casella Waste Systems. Casella manages the Chemung County landfill and also operates two other landfills in the Southern Tier: the Hakes Landfill in Steuben County and the Hyland Landfill in Allegany County. Each of these three landfills accepts gas drilling wastes. The format of the program is that each speaker will speak for 20 minutes and then take written questions.

The program has been planned to assist area residents make comments on a currently pending proposal to more than double the size of the Chemung County landfill. Comments on the Chemung County Legislature's draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the expansion are due Tues., March 4.
