Business Leaders Voice Concerns of LPG Storage Plans

The finger lakes is a region touted by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Finger Lakes tourist spending alone brings in over $2.8 billion dollars yearly, and Seneca Lake is the heart of Wine Country.

State and Federal officials are in the process of making plans to convert century old salt caverns into liquid petroleum gas and natural gas storage facilities.

According to the NY Propane Gas Association , Crestwood Subsidiary of Inergy Midstream is proposing to initially store 88.2 million gallons of LPG, but the area has enough storage for 40 million barrels.

The project could also create 8-10 permanent jobs.

On March 15 the of last year Acting Associate State Geologist Andrew Kozlowski wrote the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation a recommendation for the proposed project.

Approving the project based on findings that it will have no adverse impacts on the existing geologic environment.

But findings buy Fas Free Seneca and an Associate Attorney at Earthjustice have found the caverns may already be unsafe.
