|"We Are Seneca Lake" Rally & Press Conference Weds, 12/03 at 6 pm
"We Are Seneca Lake" calls on you once again to gather in support of our on-going campaign of civil disobedience. Since 10/24/14, there have been 83 arrests in protest against Crestwood's dangerous gas storage expansion plan in the abandoned salt caverns along the edge of Seneca Lake.
WHEN: This Wednesday, December 3
WHAT: 6:00-7:00 pm Rally & Press Conference in front of the Courthouse
7:00-8:00 pm Court Arraignments for 21 Seneca Lake Defenders. Incarcerations are expected.
WHERE: Reading Center Town Court
3914 County Rd 28
Reading Center, NY 14876
(about 5 minutes north of Watkins Glen)
--Wear blue in solidarity. Bring signs, banners and musical instruments
--Dress warmly. Space inside the court room is very limited and you will probably not get in, as priority is given to the arrestees, attorneys and the press. Please be ready to stand out in the cold for awhile and show rousing support.
-- As the number of arrests climb, so does the need for funds to pay fines and provide jail support. Cash donations, large and small, will be gratefully accepted at the event, or you can donate at http://www.wearesenecalake.com.
The Renovus Energy team came up with a great idea to help our cause: "We Are Seneca Lake" T-shirts! They are sky blue with black lettering, all in size extra large to fit over warm coats. 100% cotton. Suggested donation $15. 100% of your donation will go toward paying fines. If you'd like a shirt, please bring cash to the event.
WHY: Gas stored in unlined salt caverns has a high risk of catastrophic failure (> 40% risk of disaster within 25 years). Moreover, the volume of gas to be stored in this area will be unprecedented. The proposed LPG storage facility alone will be the largest in the Northeast and one of the largest in the US. The current natural gas expansion project would increase the methane inside the caverns from 1.5 billion cubic feet to 2 billion cubic feet with future plans, according to Crestwood’s website, to expand up to 10 billion—a seven-fold increase. No environmental assessment has considered the cumulative hazards of LPG and methane stored in massive amounts in close proximity. If Crestwood’s plans are realized, LPG and methane will be stored in caverns less than a quarter mile apart from each other.
